The Triple D be done!

by tim

Well the winter adventure race, Triple D, went off this last weekend. Sixty miles from

Dubuque to Dyersville and back. At the start it looked like maybe no one would finish this first edition of the Triple D. How little did we know of the hardy souls that would attempt this event.

For a first go it was a success, I say. Approximately 50 people had pre-registered. Around 33 racers took off on bikes. I think maybe half bailed out by the time they reached the outskirts of

Dubuque. The rest of the hardy souls fought not each other, but the course, the cold, and their own will power to keep going.  And Yes! Four of those frozen souls finished. One of the finishers ended up with a bit of frost bite on his toes.

Unfortunately or fortunately it went off without me due to the repertory infection I could not kick. Unfortunately, because I had been planning to race and was looking forward to it. Fortunately on account the high temp for the day was -6.

It was terrible to stand on the sidelines at first, to be missing out on this first inaugural event. This event that will soon to be an annual event of great proportions. After the race got going I was glad to be able to help out, it was an event that if not enough people were around to support, it could be dangerous for someone. Especially when temps are at -6 degrees.

There were some folks that showed up for the ski & bike portion as well. All the results and a good story are on Lance’s blog, you can check that out here:  http://savedbythebike.blogspot.com/

I think everyone had a good time and enjoyed themselves. Even for those who didn’t make it all the way out and back.  A lot of racers pushed themselves as far as they could and then returned. Some got to Epworth, others Graf and a few to

Farley, Iowa.

Cheers to Lance for pushing himself to get this event out, while still getting out there and training himself at night. Lance will spend his evening with the family and then head out to train at 10 o’clock to 3am, at night. Crazy maybe, put us on bikes and were as dumb as dogs sometimes.  I am inspired by it. Good luck in the upcoming Arrowhead race, Lance. You deserve a good race.
